Sustainability of the Pedestrian Park

The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s pedestrian park was designed with environmental sustainability in mind.

The planting of over 200 new trees will eliminate 60 tons of carbon from the atmosphere over their lifetime.

Especially important to New Orleans is water management. Rainwater is collected in several rain gardens and bioswales (channels designed to filter and divert stormwater runoff from the City’s stormwater management system). Within these areas, the water is absorbed by native Louisiana wetland plants such as the Louisiana Iris.

To encourage recycling, designated bins are located throughout the park.

Four lanes of traffic on Convention Center Blvd. were reduced to two, increasing walkability and green space.
